Although I have not been to New Paltz, that sounds lovely. Perfect New York City days, for me, have generally revolved around especially good museum shows, such as the Jackson Pollock retrospective at the MOMA, or "Picasso and Portraiture", also at the MOMA. Perhaps the most splendid of such shows at the MOMA was the Vienna Secessionists (Schiele, Klimt, Kokoschka, et al.), since I was not terribly familiar with any of them, and was ravished. The Guggenheim presentation of highlights from the Pompidou Center was one such Great Day show, as was the "Origins of Impressionism" at the Met (which borrowed heavily from the Musee D'Orsay), although, at 13 rooms, it eventually fatigued me. At the Whitney, I was especially pleased with the "American Century: Part One" exhibit.

For sheer relaxation, going to the ocean off-season, say in late September, where there is enough still open to give one something to do, but there are no crowds, and the air is sweet, is a very pleasant way to spend a day.
