But on SI, unless people actually meet in 3D, there is no way to confirm that they are what they say they are....there is no way at all that we can verify that. That, IMO, is a major difference from "real" life, and a cause for greater caution.

I submit that it is neither a major difference or a cause for greater caution.

Regarding the difference, married men present themselves as unmarried to women all the time in 3D. People hide ailments, dress or use makeup to look younger or thinner or taller or more muscular. They cruise around in borrowed sport cars to look wealthier and sexier. They claim degrees they haven't earned. No one says those people aren't real, that they're just aliases. They and their poster counterparts are real all right--real liars or real pretenders or real con men or maybe just real(ly) insecure.

Regarding the greater caution, the risks vary. You can't get AIDS or pregnant or shot for breaches of caution on SI like you can in 3D. You can make a fool of yourself or you can make a bad investment, but those are self imposed, not an inherent danger from the venue. SI just isn't that dangerous a place in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't matter if some people aren't who they claim to be if they can't hurt you. It only matters if they take things to 3D and get you there. Caution would dictate that you not make yourself a target either by trying not to piss anyone off that much or hiding your 3D identity or both. As long as the relationship stays in cyberspace, it's a pretty safe place.
