Good post. I think that people probably express their character, beliefs, and feelings more honestly here than with their banker--simply because there is usually no significant risk to being your true self when your address is disguised. The only real risk here is being suspended. In face-to-face-your whole life can be changed, destroyed, or furthered in accordance with what you do and say.

This is one of the reasons why I enjoy this medium. It is neat to engage people as they really are without needing to interpret and evaluate their self interest and sincerity as regards their "opinions".

Everyone I have encounteerd on SI, I know. I know you very well. I know how your training and jobs inform your viewpoints. I know about your swimming, your eating, your rationality. I know about your values and your intrinsic goodness. I know far more about you than someone meeting you face-to-face.

And you know much worth knowing about me. To put all of it into a picture, I am 6 ft. and about 190 pounds of muscle.

People face to face cannot lie about their physical characteristics--but they can lie about EVERYTHING else.

Well, they could lie about their physical reality, too. They could have Cancer, AIDS, or erectile disfunction...

So, to conclude...I always knew you were registered with SI, and I always knew you were a real person...and you have exposed who you are...just as we all have...

"SI just isn't that dangerous a place in the grand scheme of things. It doesn't matter if some people aren't who they claim to be if they can't hurt you."

Karen, it isn't dangerous and they can't hurt you, because what is here is not us. There are no physical bodies involved. Cyberspace is "safe" because the only thing here is words. But Cyberspace is not safe for people who are convinced it is just like 3d, or for people who think words can hurt them. Their own imaginations will get them here. Look at Solon- he has confused a 3d burning of a house with what happens on SI. As far as I can see he seems to think there is some equivalency.

As long as the
relationship stays in cyberspace, it's a pretty safe place.

Although some people claim to have been hurt by stuff that was purely cyberspace.
