Tony,

the last unofficial report of 30,000 subs a day was referring to Unicom United, the parent. Unicom United has a 7 million sub target. The listed Unicom, CHU, has something like at 5 million target (or is it 4 million?).

CHU has leased wireless network from United for something like 12 provinces (or is it 17?). They are in the process of negotiating leasing another 18 provinces from United.

Bottomline, it is impossible to do a linear projection of Unicom's CDMA sub adds for the rest of the year. As they introduce cheaper and cheaper handsets in the more underserved provinces, who knows what the add rate would be?

Furthermore, something like 70% of China Mobile's sub adds last month was reported as prepaids. Unicom CDMA does not offer prepaid plan right now but is supposed to start this month or by October.

So while all of us, including QCOM and all the analysts, are making educated guesses and all concluded that Unicom is overly optimistic, Unicom appears to be in the best position to get the last laugh. If they continue at this pace, they are likely to blow past the 7 million mark.
