Based on the type of photography you seem to enjoy, I can understand why you're not crazy about the
995. Suits me better as I lean more towards compositions, but the owner's manual is a nightmare, and
there's nothing intuitive about the 995. On the other hand, as a newbie photo-hobbyist, it's forced me
to think through every manual setting, so it's been a great tutorial.

Oh, gee. Here I am, just about to head out the door to go and look at and probably buy a Nikon 4500... and then I read this! (o:

Seriously, I've been looking at people's photos on photoSig, and reading reviews, etc.. and for what I am willing to spend (C$), this seems like a good choice. However, the stuff about the owner's manual for the 995 being a nightmare is not encouraging. Hmmm... As you know though, my interest is mainly in close work.. macro work, etc.. and I just don't see that much that seems any better until you make quite a leap in price.. a leap I'm not keen to make for reasons I've mentioned before -- i.e. Fear of camera ending up in the bottom of the river, being somewhere near the top of the list. And...I guess... the continual drop in price of expensive cameras as they are superseded by new models. Seems that the old saying, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall" was meant to be applied to digital cameras.

oh well... what to do...what to do...?

Frank, have you used the 995's manual focus for anything outside the table-top type shots (where one has control over distance and plenty of time)?

A couple of days ago this fine specimen walked across the path in front of me:

I did my best to lock the auto-focus on the heron rather than the leaves, but out of 10 shots, these are the "best." I'm sure I could have done better with an SLR. But I doubt I could have used the 995 manual focus in time, even if I could remember what to do (g).
