does a person really want to build a mcdonalds, across the street from another mcdonalds??....

Which assumes that any computer containing a Pentium chip is a MacDonalds.... I think that is an argument that needs to be made more carefully. The fact that PCs for legacy issues have somewhat crappy architectures does not automatically imply that every computer built around an Intel chip ought to be crappy...

want to build a mcdonalds

Burger Chef, Carls, In and Out, Taco Bell all these huge companies built empires by simply looking at all the money McDonalds made, emulating them and taking business from them with alternate or better product lines.

However the Porshe vs McDonalds argument doesn't hold water, and is getting increasingly leaky.

If Pentiums/Athlons continue to gain speed at 2X the rate of PPCs and Mother board buses continue to gain then the argument will be more like 240Zs (x86) against Fords.

The real idea here is not to get into business with Intel or AMD because the chips are dominant economically, the idea is to keep up speedwise. (We've all been through the vector arguments so let's not go through that again.)
