This one in particular: the large number of sleeping agents of Al-Qaeda's affiliates have not received any attention. They remain ready to act at the bidding of Al-Qaeda or the International Islamic Front. resonated with me. I've believed for a long time that the most urgent task of the war on terrorism is the uprooting and destruction of the al Qaeda apparatus outside the ME. Think about it: who can do more damage to us, a thousand illiterate tribesman with AK47s in caves in the ME or a dozen educated, English-speaking, motivated terrorists with cover businesses in place in the west and neutral-country passports? In order to strike inside the US, Al Qaeda needs guys that are real terrorists, not cannon fodder. He needs people who can move money, people who have bank accounts and businesses, people who have citizenship that offers protection and exemption from immediate suspicion. These people also have to be absolutely committed to the cause. The supply of these people is limited. It is one of the weakest links in the Al Qaeda chain. He may have thousands of eager recruits in the Pakistani madrassas, but how many of them can operate effectively under cover in the West? They have a small cadre of sophisticated people who handle the recruiting, the planning, the training, the logistics. Many of these are in place in countries where they feel secure, outside the ME. These people are , more than anyone else, our key enemies. Removing them from the picture - and I would support any method necessary to accomplish this, including kidnapping and outright murder - will do more to protect us than any number of invasions.
