Scott Ritter's on Fox News right now...

He's one sharp guy...tearing apart all the arguments from the interviewer in a credible and diplomatic way...would love to debate his former boss Richard Butler...=)

It was an overstatement, but we have lost our standing in the world as well as the sympathy, compassion and outpouring of love we had last year at this time by a wide margin

Karen, you seem to put so much weight on public pronouncments. They don't deserve it. Watch deeds, not words.

Nothing was easier than giving five minute's sympathy to an America bloodied and on one knee on September 11, 2001. Nothing in such easy sympathy implies of itself that the sympathisers are real allies who would back any action we took in response to the terrorism, whether to punish the terrorists or to try to prevent future attacks.

In fact, the actual response (here again, I lay more weight on deeds than words) separates the sheep from the goats. Britain, France (quietly since the change of government), Turkey, Kuwait, Qattar, Jordan and Israel have been acting as our allies, never mind pronouncements to the contrary from some of them. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are playing a double game, speaking against us, acting both for and against us. Syria, Iraq, Iran are acting agaisnt us. That's the real lineup.

I didn't see any quotation marks around it, though they were around "we are all Americans". In any case, attribution is not the issue, whether the assertion of such a precipitous slide is correct is the issue.......

By the way, today the chairman of the European Union said that the United States was entitled to act against Saddam on the basis of the pre-existing UN resolutions, if there were not timely compliance, and Kofi Annan affirmed that the Saddam must comply or face consequences......
