I believe AMD is doing exactly the latter. They need to climb into servers and workstations if they have any hope of making a profit in a fast-maturing market.

That's still what they're doing.

Itanium is later in years than Hammer is in quarters, almost as late in years as Hammer is in months.

Itanium is also compatible with nothing - a losing proposition in this industry for the past 20 years. One more quarter's delay will sting, but isn't a major blow.
