Yea, he showed Khruschev what we were made of at the Bay of Pigs. No lessons learned there by the Ruskies I suppose.

Kennedy's stiff upper lip, repaired that misconception.

"Bulganin's nuclear blackmail in 1956."
Zeev,
Are we talking about Hungary here?
If so thats another interesting issue and it relates to iraq. Should the US have gone to war over Hungary given the probably nuclear consequences. If there is no war now and there is no intrusive inspections either, i think the next time saddam flexes his muscles against neighbors we would back off. Too much risk of WMD use in a few years even here in the US. We would have to play lets make a deal with saddam. US population would not support a war to defend an arab state where reportedly 2/3 of the population carry pics of bin laden. Cynical you may say--yes i would answer. We have a chance to nip this in the bud now either thru use of force or intrusive inspections. If the Kofi Annans of the world talk us out of it and dont do real inspection and two years from now Kuwait is attacked again and they come begging, I would not be for it. Even if it was Saudi Arabia our great friend i would sooner cut a deal with Saddam(he gets contrl of holy places-we share oil proceeds) than risk WMD attack on us. Lets start taxing SUVs and and increasing domestic production just in case. And if there really is to be meaninful containment of iraq it needs to be done by strenghthening Iran, Turkey, and Israel the three non arab states in the region. Add Egypt and Jordan on the arab side. Mike

Sadam's reaction was a poor interpretation of a comment taken out of context.

The Cuban missile crisis had little to do with Eisenhower. Russia thought it only fair that the US had nuclear weapons encircling them as well.

You give Kennedy's upper lip too much credit. It was thwarted only by timely detection. Russians venturing into our backyard was no more palatable than ours in theirs... Fortunately Russia understood the message and so did Eisenhower. Altruism works best when only one guy has a stick.
