charles - IBM bought bought stratus a ways back - they were Tandem's only significant competition, although weak competition.

IBM does, as you say, have several specialized fault-tolerant configurations but are an order of magnitude behind Tandem.

But the whole market for that class of machine is about $3B, and not growing, so it's not a hot area for any of the big players.
