Ruidoso is a wonderful place to visit. Charleymane and I have been there twice and loved it. I hope we will return many times in the future. Charleymane is my husband and his cousin lives there as I know he has told you. It is a mountainous oasis surrounded by the desert. The community has artists and a used bookstore. You will enjoy it if you go there.

If you're not in any particular hurry I'd say its worthwhile to go there. Will you be on I-10 going through El Paso? It's only 70 miles north of El Paso. It's beautiful country, but the amenities in town are things you'll find in greater abundance out near Tucson. So I guess it depends on what you're looking for.
