See "Dependent on DC" by C. Twight. An excellent read.

It's clear that it isn't "the defense contractors" creating massive dependency on military-governmental complex, alone.
It is the natural tendency of human business and gov't officials to increase their own benefits, unfortunately often by deception and outright lies.

The last 50 years have seen tremendous amount of the country's wealth flow through the DC area, and filter through the "bandits" and economy there, at the expense of the rest of the country. Lies about Social "Security", and about National "Security" are legendary excuses for lying about accounting, and about threats, while keeping the truth secret and hiring thousands of so-called public relations staff in all departments of gov't.

As far as "who started the war", remember, it's a war against a noun: "terrorism". Where's the endpoint? Answer: there isn't one. Only when the American people get tired of excuses will support for terrorists with one hand and 'fighting' terrorism with the other, stop.

That's a 'war' where everyone can jump on the bandwagon that has something to gain. Warlords and defense contractors gain the most, and support the most both overtly and, of course, covertly. Everyone else who lives off the government economy indirectly, perhaps including yourself, also benefits, including all those companies you mention.

The only victims are the rest of the citizens of the US and subjects of warlords everywhere.

Had the DOD not been overfunded for the past 50 years there would have been less temptation to engage in 200 "incursions" around the world since then, and be currently engaged in 7 countries.

The only reasons to be more suspicious of DOD-related people and spooks such as Bush Senior are (a)the history of such events as the Project Northwoods and Tonkin Gulf where a number of deaths are tolerated by gov't officials for a 'larger purpose' and (b)Bush in bed with Saudis and various war-profiteering arrangements going back decades. Junior is a third-generation war profiteer at this point.

Disclosure: I was in DC starting up a telcom business a while back -- it was amazing. Reminds me of an intellectual Hollywood, a small town with lots of money, parties and presentations every night with shrimp and steak. I never had to buy dinner. A lot of intelligent interesting people, most lobbying for jobs, like, "meet my husband Tom, he was the Asst Secty of Transportation under Reagan", etc. I, too, was a beneficiary of this misbegotten largess... -g-
