Nobody is claiming it will be quick and easy, Steven. Certainly not me.

People may not be claiming that it will be quick and easy, but I have seen many posts here that seem to assume that it will be. Certainly there seems to be very little discussion, either here or at the policy level, of what the difficulties will be, how they can be dealt with, and – most important – their ramifications in the fight against terrorism.

Arab backwardness bit us squarely in the ass September 11th, and it is now a vital national security interest to alleviate that condition.

I am not convinced that it is within our power to alleviate Arab backwardness, any more than it is in our power to bring order to Africa. The reasons why are explained in some exorbitant detail in the later stages of this post:
