Dear QS: Funny, I didnt get that interpretation at all. I was thinking, hmmm, they never had a "Chief" engineer before, they appointed this fellow, sounds like he finally won out in his arguements and what we were reading IS the future for SUNW. jdn

Well looking on the positive side SUNW still has the best combo of hardware/OS and support for UNIX. That won't change anytime soon and they should be marketing themselves as best of breed UNIX. I've seen/worked with HP-UX/AIX and almost every other variant of UNIX and by far Sun/Solaris is the best of breed.

The real question is can Sun maintain it's relatively high hardware margins moving forward? My guess is no. Just as x86 technology took over the workstation market it is slowly dominating the small to mid server market; running both Linux and Windows.

So where does this leave Sun?

1. Cheap small server packages: keep MS/Linux out of enterprise
- priced to compete, fault tolerant packages
- continue with the cube concept

2. Java Consulting: make $$
- they need a much stronger professional services organization to captilize on the enterprise migration to J2EE
- hardware can drive consulting which can drive hardware sales again; nice circle

3. Sellable Java Products
- IBM has WebSphere, the supposed #2 J2EE platform, which is a huge consulting revenue winner and good for sales
- hire the people that can build this stuff, heck buy BEA
