Because I spent a number of years interacting with those caretakers. Some don't want or deserve sympathy. But some do. What, you don't feel the least bit of sympathy ["Kindness of feeling toward one who suffers; pity; commiseration; compassion. " "sharing the feelings of others (especially feelings of sorrow or anguish)"] for a couple who have three children, and then have a profoundly handicapped child who requires 24/7 care, virtually (or sometimes literally) bankrupts them, forces them to give up the life they had planned, requires that they profoundly change their lives in ways they had never expected nor wanted? Some people adapt wonderfully and find great joy in such caretaking. I have nothing but enormous admiration for them. But others do not. They accept the responsibility because it is their responsibility, but they also regret the loss of the life they had wanted and planned for themselves and their other children. And yes, I have sympathy, compassion, for them. I would hope that if you got to know them, you would have sympathy for them, too.
