"How do we do that? Saddam is pretty well protected, and the terrorists, if they are there, are probably pretty well dispersed around the country."

I don't know. If you can't identify your enemy then what are you doing in the first place. Saddam is still a question mark. "and the terrorists" They should be ID'd and specific warrants should be issued. When we have them identified, we need to have some sort of due process for going after them. They are dispersed throughout the world. If you can't find them, it is not a justification for blowing everything up.

There are many other threats to the USA and as you point out there are much more devastating ones from within and from the outside. However, that should have nothing to do with our position on whether or not to act against Iraq.

...and there is almost nobody in the country interested in standing up for Iraq, so there is little political cost if we do attack, since once the decision is made virtually all major politicians, pundits, etc. will fall nicely into line.

It's called picking your battles. This one is win-able. If the political support can be garnered it is possible that it could even turn out bloodless. There are many benefits to the USA and the World in having a change of Regime in Iraq.

"All of which are terrible reasons for starting a war.

Agreed.

"Nor do I see many of the drum beaters here on SI, or in my local community, volunteering for front line duty. Do you?"

I have noticed that the media (movies, 911 documentaries, news, etc) has turned much more Hawkish over the past year. I haven't seen little boys play war in forty years but they are doing it now. I don't think we would have any problem finding soldiers.

I want to know who and what my enemy represents and that putting them to the sword is an unavoidable last resort. I want assurance that when we go to war it is American ideals that we are fighting for, not just glory and power because it is popular. I do not want to see Americans elisted to support empire building on the backs of oppressed foriegners.
