Sam, I agree with most of you stated, the difference is that in the past, those policies where
obfuscated" and this time, there is quite some clarity of purpose. I may not agree with the administration "acquiring" the right to determine what kind of regime other sovereign countries have, but you must admit, it cannot be clearer that the stated goal of "Regime Change". In the past we engaged a lot in "regime change", but never openly stated that as our goal, it was always carried out in stealth, and too often with disastrous results. Maybe the clarity of purpose and process openess will make such a change more peaceful.

Right on! What a joke that we villify our former friend and ally Saddam Huessein. Saddam wasn't such a bad guy when he was our ally in the 1980s, during the Iran-Iraq war and while he was gassing the Kurds. Yeah right!

Also, your point about the U.S. supporting other equal if not worse dictators (thugs) is a very good point. We had no problem toppeling a democracy in Iran and installing and supporting the Shah of Iran and his brutal secret police SAVAK so we could control their oil resources. We've supported all sorts of thugs and dictators throughout Latin America over the years so we could exploit their resources.

The U.S. has no moral underpinning to topple Saddam. I believe there is an alterior motive at work here. American oil companies want to control Iraq's oil resources and the Bush Admin is doing their bidding by whipping up this war hysteria against Saddam.
