Even today, when presented with a vital national interest in a less than savory nation, #3 isn't always an option. I'd say Saudi Arabia falls in this category right now.

Agreed. Same could be said for China, and a number of our present allies on the WAT (Pakistan, that "stan" where the dictator just named the days of the year after himself.)

Not exactly the same thing as propping up Somoza in Nicaragua, or the Shah of Iran, though. We don't seem to do that like we used to, though.
