I agree that there are certain things that are inconceivable given a certain sort of socialization, and perhaps even environmental toxicity. It has been said that anyone can kill, and that is true, but let's face it, none of our kids are likely to face the sort of extreme circumstances that would elicit that behavior, unless in the military or on a police force, and none of them are going to "cap" someone over an Eddie Bauer jacket.

On the other hand, we are not in a very good position to know where to draw the line of responsibility. At a certain point, the legal system takes over the function of parents, in imposing discipline and calling to account. Unless we have a cure for the kind of pathologies we are discussing, or want to lock them up forever (or save the trouble and kill them), our only recourse would seem to be whack them when they are bad, until they learn that they have to conform to certain standards. We cannot just let them run loose, and we would have to take them away from their parents and raise them in state homes to hope to avoid the problem in the first place, another can of worms......

Have you ever looked at the life story of James Mathew Barrie (Author of Peter Pan). He was the 9th of ten children. His brother David was his mother's favorite. David died in a skating accident and James began obsessively to dress in his dead brother's clothing; trying unsuccessfully to gain his mother's attention. James had a syndrome that is typical of creatures who are never handled or attended to. He remained extremely small all his life and never developed adult genetalia. Most of his writings centered around a child like main character who over came overwhelming obstacles.
