I agree, but then that should give us insight when dealing with problems of global scale vis-a-vis "bomb 'em to send the message".

I don't think we should beat vicious dogs. I would advocate either retraining, drugging or compassionate euthanasia, but not a beating or to throw them in with some lions to know how their victims feel when savaged.

My problem with the death penalty and much of the classic approaches to domestic and international conflict is that it is done so inconsistently and mostly to people who lack the money for good representation.

We shouldn't institutionalize the brutality of criminals into the "correction" system that we expect to retrain them. Where is the proof of efficacy of the correction system? Or that massive bombings of civil populations brings any end repressive regimes? If these were medical treatments for diseases, I can tell you they would be off the market.
