CB, I think we won't be competing in the same space, so there'll be benefits, but no drawbacks. I suppose I should try to think of some potential conflicts of interest.

As long as chimps live in the forest and we don't need the forest, they do just fine.

We don't need to be the best thing 'alive' to have a nice life. Ants, worms and chimps go about their business quite happily with no interaction with us [unless they get in our cupboard or we take over their place for a new road or something].

In the meantime, we get a LOT of benefits from the development process. Just as chimps got lots of benefits from social groups, but can't function in a modern city. Heck, lots of chimps have a cushy life hanging out in zoos, carefully designed to allow lots of natural activity [but without lions and stuff hassling them].

Another poor analogy would be that Kiwis live on a little island in the middle of the ocean - a kind of rearguard chimpoid species. Meanwhile, in another world, the USA is booming. A huge new entity. Mostly they don't know we exist, so we're okay [as long as they don't accidentally stomp us]. We even contrive to oil a few cogs in the USA machine and they flick us a few CDMA ASICs or Windows XP clones to keep us happy and oiling away. Our DNA gets a turbo boost from the USA although we are almost irrelevant to the USA [except we have their America's Cup].

Because our interests don't conflict, they leave us in our little swamp, happily wallowing away, playing rugby, drinking beer, whacking golf balls and chasing sheep [and girls]. Give it time and we could turn into a new chimpoid species!
