TSMC pushes out 'risk production' for 90-nm process
Semiconductor Business News
(09/20/02 09:15 p.m. EST)

SAN JOSE -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) late today disclosed it has re-defined and pushed out the “risk production” schedule for its 90-nm process technology.

In April, TSMC originally announced plans to move into "risk production"--or early production--for its 90-nm process by the third quarter of 2002. The foundry giant's 90-nm technology has been branded "Nexsys" (see April 9 story ).

Now, the Hsinchu-based foundry vendor has pushed out its “risk production” scheduled for the process to the second quarter of 2003, according to a spokesman for TSMC. “We have modified our roadmap,” the spokesman said.

The announcement also involves the semantics concerning the term “risk production.”

TSMC has apparently modified the definition of “risk production.” The term now refers to the company's “first full production run” for the 90-nm process, which reflects a “more stringent definition of risk production,” the spokesman added.
