Steven Den Beste tries to figure out what, exactly, the left is arguing for, as the arguments make so little sense on a mechanistic or diplomatic level. How's he do?:

One of the basic argument mistakes that even sophomores are taught to avoid is conflation, putting two things together that don't belong together. International Court issues are separate from environmental issues are separate from invading Iraq are separate from.

Perhaps the reason so many who write on the right think there is one enveloping ideology on the left which propels everything is that they think that is the way political thinking should proceed.

What is that Bill says, he won't say the left is dumb if the left won't say the right is evil. Well, assuming Den Beste considers he is writing from the right, he's making a seriously strong case for some sort of brain cell shortage on his own part.

" How's he do? "

He has a complete disconnect between all the little dots on his screen and can't or won't try to put them together.

Immediately after 9-11-01 , the free world at large was issuing statements to the effect that humanity , or the free world , or even Christianity were attacked and we may be on a path towards a war of civilizations.

Those same countries came together as they did during the Gulf War 1 and we were united towards a common enemy.

Terrorism - So far so good.

As things moved along, the rest of the world observed America, under Bush, begin to resume a unilateral inside - out view of the world that he had started well before that fateful day. This reached its peak when Bush basically read the riot act to the UN.

This is having conflicting repercussions, as one train of thought is to say," yea - your right - let's roll ", and the other saying " who is this masked man? - the Lone Ranger? "

So it's looked upon by some as hypocrisy .You want this but you don't want that. We're a world community unless that's a problem for you. We'll find some way to convince OUR people that it's your way or the hi-way .

Not going to work in this information age.People all over the world see this in real time today, and even they seem to be able to connect the dots better than Bush, and certainly better than SDB.

How'd I Do?

FWIW, I think he's absolutely right re the displacement of the numinosity of "faith", "cosmic justice", et al from the sphere of religious belief to that of political belief.

Individuals have an innate need to place their irrational faith in something, and expect some ultimate form of justice to magically ensue from it.

Even those who have destroyed the possibility of believing in God for themselves are still human beings and as such they are still driven, in general, by the same tendency to idealize some irrational or supra-rational personal belief.

And to flatly deny it.

What all those things will do is to reduce our burden of sin, and thus reduce the amount of punishment that the universe will mete out to us.

Excellent. This does make sense.

Otherwise, why else would they feel so passionately that (for example) we MUST sign onto the landmine treaty IMMEDIATELY or we MUST stop driving SUVs IMMEDIATELY, else all is surely lost?
