"But I agreed with Karen to drop the alias-3D discussion."

Interesting. I guess I am out of the loop. I didn't see that. I thought you all were of the, "just ignore" things you don't want to give serious attention to mind set. Why would Karen cast such a directive?

"Here, we see only one side of the person. It is easy here, too, to be signifcantly misled about a person."

Anyway, I would agree with you if the claim was that you know the person or know all there is to know about the person, or know the person better than other people do who know that person from a different setting.

However, I think it is fair to say that you know that person, or something about his character, from your perspective. It may be based on some observations that you are able to make that others are not. It may infact qualify you to say that you know that person better than other people do. I would assume by such a claim that you are referring to some specific aspect of that persons character that other people have not had privvy to...as opposed to knowing everything about the person....of course. It is also probable that your perspective is filtered by your experiencial background and even the person himself would say that you have it wrong. In that case as the cliche goes, do we ever "really" know anybody?

""""""In your example, the person who only sees your character on the playing field might assume that in all his life he was boorish, quick to anger, obnoxious, and loudmouthed. A total jerk, in other words.""""""

This person is a total jerk....and more....

He has just learned to control his behavior in other arenas where he would lose his strength and position if he were found to be said "jerk."

A POS is a POS in a tux or in burlap. The worst behavior you see in a person is what they would like to be 100% of the time....they just can't get away with it 100% of the time.
