What was it that set you and shootie off to such an extreme?

I don't know what set Shootie off. I don't know that he was really referring to your example. If he was, it was from a different angle, one that seemed worth mentioning to me. Take the example of the mafioso who loves his family. To me, he's scum who happens to love his family rather than a family man who happens to be a criminal. I think what we really are is how we behave under the worst of circumstances. The alternative is that we are how we behave under the best of circumstances but we have excuses for the other occasions. Well, I don't buy that. I didn't think that you were into excuse making either.

As for your sports fan, in my hierarchy of behavioral values, I put getting worked up over competitive sports among the seriously ignoble behaviors. Like the hockey dads that had that fight or the jerk who attacked the coach the other day. Yeah, I can be very judgmental about people like that. There's no excuse.

We had been talking about people showing different aspects of themselves in different venues. To the extent that I participated in the discussion, I was referring to "different" aspects rather than to "better or worse." So, since Shootie brought up the better or worse spin on the issue, I noticed my earlier overside and chimed in.
