The main idea in Garp is that of the "undertoad", which is not much of an idea. Hard for me to overlook the general klunkiness of the book.....

There is a distinct preference for sociologically analyzable books. Thus, The Great Gatsby is about the Jazz Age, the nouveaux riches, social climbing, the class system, old money, and so on. On the Road is about youthful rebellion in the Decade of Conformity, the lure of the oppressed as role models for disaffected youth, the effects of post-war affluence and mobility on those seeking new ways to live, etc. Considerations like narrative structure, plot development, characterization, summary narrative versus dramatization, and so forth are definitely on the back burner.......
