The Brothers K is definitely in the top 5. I have trouble naming a top one so I will just leave it as one of the contenders. I read it in college and basically stopped everything else I was doing for a week (except eating, of course <g>) and let that book take over. Just an amazing piece of writing, even lost as it must be in the translation.

The movie, OTOH, brings to mind something completely different. I saw it in a college auditorium, presented by some local film society. And the movie is going along and suddenly, up on the screen, there he is....Captain Kirk! (William Shatner, who I believe played the youngest brother). And the crowd just starts laughing.....and somebody yells "Beam Me Up, Scotty!". Not exactly what the filmmaker had in mind, I suspect.
