Again, there is a distinction between the self- contained world of literature, and facts asserted as having bearing on a particular issue or subject. Even in the Meno, when refering to the virtuous father who had not been able to raise a virtuous son, though it may not matter if the examplar exists, it is important that we can refer to our experience and say "I have known that to happen". Similarly, other dialogues draw upon commonplace experience in order to further the discussion, rather than more specialized facts. However, the question of how accurate is the narrative in Thucydides is unavoidable, whether or not it can be resolved.........
