"imagine 15 ambush deaths per week
that would be 750 per year"

Well, one death generally makes the evening news, even if it's an accidental one right here in the US of A. If there were 15 deaths per week via ambush being covered up as accidental, it would be an unusual, relentless spike (rember, real accidental deaths would not stop either).

"the press are not scattered all across the country"

Actually, I've watched a number of documentaries & news reports from multiple channels showing media right in the thick of things........ and they weren't in anything resembling a city, town or village. It doesn't mean they are everywhere, but they are spread about & they interview sources to get close to the action & to get inside scoops.

Jim, I'm not saying it ain't true. I'm just saying it's a bit hard for me to imagine happening without it being exposed at a great cost to the perpetrators.

some trivia: did you know the origin of the name Kandahar?

Nope <gg>, but you seem to have it right.

Although some contemporary scholars have suggested other possibilities for the origin of the name, it has long been believed that Kandahar takes its name from its founder, Alexander of Macedon -- "Iskandahar" is Arabic for Alexander.

Popular belief ascribes the foundation of the old city to Alexander the Great.
