Israel Ignores U.N. Demand

It does make it hypercritical to complain that Iraq hasn't paid reparations as a pretext to attack. It makes you wonder if Junior has ever seen a newspaper.

If you turn around and say to students and faculty that criticism of Sharon's government is anti-semitic, that's
discouraging thought.

If that's what happened you would be right. It's not what happened, neither in black and white or les nuances.

I doubt this helped but who knows.

Probably not, since you appear not to be trying, but who knows.

I argued he took the wrong position by calling the petitioners anti-semitic.

He didn't. He said their actions might well be anti-semitic in effect, if not intent. He was clear, even if no one else is.

Definitely not. Because one of the very highest purposes of a university is to encourage criticism, to encourage students to think for themselves. If you turn around and say to students and faculty that criticism of Sharon's government is anti-semitic, that's discouraging thought.

Once the Prez puts it out there, especially the way he did, it's going to be pulled apart six ways from Sunday, by everyone. I'd hardly call it discouraging thought.

When I was an undergrad I debated the university president. He was kind of repressive, probably much more so than Summers - made no never mind to me, nor anyone else, as far as I know.

I doubt young folk have changed a great deal in the meantime.
