Foucault's pendulum is another example of Coriolis. Make one your self. Suspend a surveyor's plumb from a string perhaps 6 feet long indoors in the absence any draft. Let it just graze a path in loose sand on a board. Allow it to swing for about 5 minutes. You will see it start to trace to the right about 1/4 inch in that time in Carolina. Perhaps those in Gnome, Aleyska will see better effect in that time. If you just set it on a path along a pencil line, it will be evident in time, lining on it that it goes to the right. A better fouc-up is to take flexible rod and suspend it from a washer in a ball and socket arrangement. A universal joint from a driveshaft suspended from a thrust bearing suspending about a 12 pound weight on an 8 foot pendulum should swing long enough to show the effect. Foucault's original experiment was with a 60 pound weight on a 20 foot rod. It would swing for some time.
At 45 degrees north the pendulum swings 254.56 degrees in 24 hours. Of course at the equator it will not deviate at all, and will only swing 360 in 24 at the north pole.

The people at Ferrari know this stuff, and if you correspond with the company, I am sure they will fill you in. (I can see the letter pinned up on the wall of the engineers' office, and people snickering each time they pass it.)

The bit about taking your hands off the wheel of a mercedez benz for one minute on a straight road actually works well. Do not try it with detroit iron. If you do, make sure your will is up to date. The reason for this is the Benz will not give you any trouble if you hit a shoulder and try to recover or brake. (well, not_that_much ... I am still here. ) It will still go straight. The detroit car may skid AND roll, if you tap the brakes or pull to the left. The benz would stop in a straight line with two wheels in the shoulder --and-- no hands on the wheel. Also, its suspension is designed for four wheel drift stability. The detroit iron does NOT have negative roll steering radius, and the radial tires were added as an afterthought -- four wheel drift could easily roll. Without kingpins you really should not be using radial tires. Again, do NOT try this latter trick. I have done it, but I am certifiably experimental. And the shoulder may well be real soft.
