I think you're correct. The traditional news nomenclature was to use "alleged" and "suspect" until conviction, then trust that the system got it right and call the person the "convicted" or "perpetrator" while dropping the "alleged" part. Or sometimes, if the convicted person's innocence is still being asserted, they will say that the convicted person "claims" to be innocent.

Nowadays that may have changed. I don't watch TV news much anymore. But we are in an era where, for example, Dan Rather found the Gary Condit/Chandra Levy situation unworthy of a single mention on his national news broadcast for two and a half months after Levy's disappearance, and then only mentioned it in the context of saying it wasn't worthy of our attention.
