Don
what is going on is that Toyota will not share the computer codes that are used to diagnose problems in vehicles.
so if you want your car serviced, you HAVE to bring it to Toyota.
as a Toyota owner i still own a 1985 toyota cressida wagon, bought new, with 300,000 miles on it,along with some newer models.
regards john

<<It seems unlikely that Toyota has suddenly started producing cars with high service requirements, and I hadn't noticed any particular level of Toyota incentives, and it doesn't sound like they need them anyway.

Does anyone have a likely explanation? Are they just grabbing market share? >>
