Kelly unfortunately signed her entire career away. If you look at the deal she signed to get on AI, they have 90% of her earnings and royalties going to the producers of the show.FREAKEN PATHETIC!!

I read somewhere she got payed $1300. for one of her TV appearances..very sad.

OT> Hi Matt. Well, if you were to hear the sort of talent that looms around the recording centers, you would see what I mean. LeAnne Rimes was not the exception to the rule. Many teenagers around Nashville, LA and New York are extremely well trained and seasoned.

Yes, I saw the show. Yes, Kelly was one of the best from what they had. Yes, she has a powerful voice. Yes, in live performances she sings MANY notes out of tune. Yes, she will improve in time. No, she did not out-sing Reba, who has a trophy case filled with "top vocalist" awards.

I do respect your opinion. The nice thing about the arts is that two people can feel completely different about it.

As for the song on the charts, it was well chosen. But the thing that made the difference was the PROMOTION. I guarantee the SONG would have been a hit with any number of singers from the show. . . though the song was BETTER SUITED to Kelly's strong voice. My point was that the HYPE was superb. . . like nothing I've seen in decades. The show sucked in the viewers. . . thus guaranteeing a hit single.

The next Idol show begins shooting in a week or so. These producer/promoters have genius level ideas and their execution is equally exquisite. My money is on the next singer to also have a hit. They select the singer to fit the song. . . .the fundamental behind Artist & Repetoire. Having a contest to do so is a brilliant A&R technique.

I have always said about the record industry that, "when it comes to WHO gets a recording deal, it is run in an unfair manner." "If it were about the BEST singer/performer/artist getting signed, then they would simply hold a contest." Well, now they have the contest. . .and yes, it should yield some excellent singers. I am impressed that so many producers can collaborate and make something so big. . . perhaps bigger hype into media sales than anything since Saturday Night Fever.

Regarding the singers, I think that Justin has great appeal and a nice smooth voice. . and could also get signed, since he has a big following built by the show. Pop music needs a new male singer. . .though the styles of musics now popular are not the type that he generally sings.

But if I were to pick two from the original group that had STAR power, I would pick Christina, who easily is the most charismatic (though not the right voice for the pre-selected songs) and Ejay, who has the most character. . an interesting strong voice and terrific stage presence.

But then I agreed with 90% of what Simon said about all the singers. . . most were horrific. . . .though I am far more tactful in my let downs. I learned while judging beauty contests in Florida that if you are going to criticize someone, you must first find something that you like about them. . .then you can either compare the good with the not so good. . . or illustrate what needs more work, etc. As you can imagine, I was always last to put down my pen.

"But my family says that my song is the best they have ever heard. And my girlfriend says that I have a sexy voice."

My answer: "Well, then they are the ones you should play to.. .nothing wrong with enjoying music to please your family. . and living happily ever after. But if you want to COMPETE in the entertainment BUSINESS, then you need to stop listening to those who love you and start listening to those who don't." (Can't tell you the number of producing projects I lost with that honesty)

As a faculty member with LASS, the old songwriters workshop in LA. . .when attending showcases, panels and seminars, I had to let some songwriters know that they had LOADS of work ahead of them to do before they would be taken seriously . . . suggesting books and exercises, etc. I would keep pointing to the one(s) I liked and why. I tried using analogies and anecdotes. . . about 'polishing turds'. . and things that Lennon said. . . hoping humor would soften the blow. . .it wasn't always successful. They work so hard trying to write great songs. .and not all of them have true talent . . . so hearing that theirs is NOT going to be a big seller or get picked up at all is ALWAYS a bitter pill.

Nobody likes to hear that their baby is ugly.
