If you do not explain you just might not care. I don't think that is the same as disrespect. Disrespect seems a little more active to me. But maybe it isn't to you. I feel there is this huge area between respect and disrespect where you just don't care yet. Where there is no selfish duty (except to obey the laws, and only then if you buy into the social contract) and no privilege. That is the area I am thinking about. You seem to be thinking about close friends and family. Even there I don't see it as a duty we owe- but rather as self preservation, and preservation of the emotional cocoon most people have.

What if the explanation is a lie? Or insulting?

Suppose I have a lunch meeting with you at 12:00. I need to leave the house at 11:30 to make it, but I'm involved in a book and decide that rather than being on time, I prefer to finish my chapter. If it were somebody else I cared out I would put down the book and go, but I don't much care about you. So I read until quarter of, and then leave. So I'm 15 minutes late.

If I say I was unavoidably detained, it's a lie.

If I say I didn't notice the time, it's a lie.

If I say the truth, that I knew I was going to be late but preferred finishing my chapter to being on time for lunch with you, that's going to make things worse than not explaining at all.
