There is no meaningful self-interest without a self. Internalized values are essential to how we define ourselves. In a broad sense, then, internalization is "self-interested" because it is necessary for us to have values in order to constitute an empirical self capable of meeting social expectations. In a narrow sense, though,it is not self- interested at all because it occurs before there is a self with definable interests to pursue.......
