rumors of Hitler or Lenin's atrocities were thought of as too grotesque to be possible at the time.

I have no trouble believing the stories. Torture happens in all cultures, but some seem to have a higher level of it than others. The Concentration Camp stuff is easy to believe. It's like the old Mafia line, "Hey this isn't personal, its business," While the Germans were killing millions, they were treating our POW's with great restraint. At the same time the Japanese were committing the foulest atrocities on our guys.

The personal stuff that Saddam and his crew engage in seems to have happened. I mentioned, a couple of weeks ago, of reading about torture that the Egyptian Secret Police has engaged in against the Muslim Brotherhood that was so stomach turning I could not post it here.

I read recently Saddam sees himself as a modern day Lenin.

As soon as I finish Pollack, I'll be an authority on such matters. ;-) But, seriously, for the moment, I believe the parallel is to Stalin, not Lenin.
