What a way to spend a Saturday afternoon -- with you, EC, instead of out on the lawn with a water hose where I belong today.

No, I don't think Ahmed ever figured that his first name would keep him out of the Iraqi military. It was a risk he felt he had to take. But in the end, I figure he thought he could charm his way through or, as a last resort, bribe. You don't know this Ahmed. <g> Anyway, it never came down to that.

There are two other contexts besides India where last names are not common. Many Indonesian people go by only a single name. I don't know if there is a verbal last name that is not written down or what the situation is.

Secondly is the Biblical tradition of "ccc", son of "bbb", son of "aaa". In Jewish religious usage, that's still how it is today, with no reference to last name.
