Indonesia is really a polyglot culture. The island of Bali is really the center of Hindu culture there, with shadow puppets, gamelan music, and sacred monkeys.

West-to-east, it has one of the longest countries in the world.

The commercial traditions of Indonesia are mainly derived from the Netherlands, India, and China. The Dutch had to leave when Indonesia gained independence. The Chinese are largely persona-non-grata, due to aborted coup attempts in the early (and not so distant) history of an independent Indonesia. That leaves just the Indians, which fits your theory well. Even the Indian culture, however, feels much pressure under governmental policies to 'Indonesianize'.
