For all its problems consider yourself lucky to live in the States.

No, Canada vs US, I'm not getting into that one, not even satirically. My M.D., originally from Montreal, will agree with you. On the other hand, many US people in their 50s found refuge in Canada because they did not believe in the military policies of their own government in the 1960s. There are, of course, other contrasts between the two countries that can be interpreted to favor one or the other.

I've always enjoyed my visits to Canada. It's a clean, beautiful country.

Having said that, just about the worst hassling I've ever had in my international travels was with Canadian Immigration/Customs on arriving in Calgary one night about 10 p.m. I guess I was careless by saying I was on a two-day business trip. This led to a 'discussion' lasting close to 90 minutes about how taxes were going to have to be paid to the Canadian government on the income I would have during my two days' presence in Canada.

During the interview, I managed to scribble out a draft memo to my Canadian contractor to terminate our business arrangement for the remainder of our contract period on the basis of governmental interference with my presence in Canada. I asked this customs official for his name and his supervisor's, so that I could copy the supervisor on my contract cancellation with a note about just how much tax money the Canadian government would lose from the decreased earnings of my contractor.

Somehow, the 'interview' ended quietly very shortly after that.

Aside from that incident, I've never had any problems in Canada and have visited several times after that.

Is the US better than Canada? A question not to be touched with a ten-foot (or three-meter) pole!
