Stephen O,

You've been fed a series of lies about why the inspectors left Iraq in 1998. The most plausible story, and the one I believe is that the U.S. and UK stuffed the purportedly UN-based and neutral inspection staffs with spies. CIA and MI6 both provided personnel to the force. The Iraqis rightly took offense to this deceitful manipulation of the inspection process and refused to cooperate with the most egregious and unfair demands of the spies. What would you do?

Let's be perfectly clear. The Iraqis did not kick out the inspectors. The inspectors were ordered out by their higher-ups in the U.S. and UK in anticipation of the malevolent bombing runs that were commenced a couple of weeks after the inspectors left the country.

You really would do yourself a great favor by learning the real history of our sordid relationship with Iraq. Here's a new book that has a wealth of honest detail:

Also, you may have read recently that Sen. Robert Byrd is exposing the Bush betrayal of America and the world in this article:

truthout.org

You should compare that information to what is contained here:

IRAQGATE: NY Times Wm. Safire on the criminal conspiracy in the G.H.W. Bush administration to subvert export regimes and prop up Saddan Hussein. Investigation eventually suppressed by pardon of Sec. of Def. Weinburger, among other maneuvers.: (Archival: Publication date 18 May 1992)
security-policy.org
ALSO: Henry Gonzales amazing speech laying out the utter deceit of the U.S. realpolitik sales of arms to Iraq during the GHW Bush reign, this is long, comprehensive and completely damning.........

Wrong. The inspectors left on their own accord. After it was revealed that they had been spying, and after the U.S. had used that info to bomb Iraq, Saddam understandably resisted further inspections.
