JFK got us into Vietnam, not Johnson.

Actually Eisenhower was the first one to authorize troops (under the guise of observers) to Vietnam.

Interestingly, Charles de Gaulle is reputed to have told Ike "Ike, as the old friend who fought by your side in WWII, let me tell you, you don't want to fight that war. The Vietnamese are the best soldiers I've ever seen".
