IMO we'd be a much more prosperous country at all levels without such excessive gov't intervention.

I have to disagree. While most people are nice, some are downright ruthless, and in an environment of ruthlessness many more join in the mayhem to some degree. This is why we have police at the local level. This is why we need a regulatory agency at the national level.

I don't think it can be left up to the CEOs to ensure some modicum of fair play and justice. Too often they will find self interest in the way. The government has it's problems, but at least until recently it has been an elected government and there is some recourse and attempt to work on behalf of the citizens. If government were severly cut I doubt that typical Americans would see any gain. There would be just a higher demand for old master paintings in corporate jets or some other such nonsense where the most ruthless laugh their scorn at those who play by unenforced rules.
