I disagree.
We are selfish. Our genes our selfish. Our memes are selfish. We advance those things. That seems logical to me.

I disagree, too. I think it's all self interest. And I don't think that's a bad thing, as long as it's "enlightened self interest." One of the most important things I ever learned in my life. Thank you, Ayn Rand. <g>

During the years I was doing active fundraising, I learned very quickly that while people give money for a variety of reasons, they are all ultimately self-interested reasons.

I never ran across anybody who gave me or my organizations money when it was contrary to their best interests to do so.

When you see a major polluter give money to the Sierra Club, you know dang well they don't expect it to be used to sue the polluter, and if it were, there wouldn't be any more money showing up, and the donor would realize they had made a miscalculation.

Find me a furrier who has given money to buy ten gallons of fake blood for a PETA activist, and I'll think of coming around to your side of the argument.
