ROFL because we like to think Very Good Things about ourselves for being Very Good People. Even if you don't tell a soul, you can't tell me someone who thinks he or she is Very Special Indeed for doing a very special thing isn't getting a very self interested jolt from it. I'm not knocking it. I'm glad people get their brains tickled by do-gooding- as long as it isn't officious and meddling do-gooding. I've no problem with it at all. Of course I see it as self interested, but I don't find that a bad thing.
