Ted,

What do you think is causing Saudi individuals to become a problem for us? bin Laden may be evil and an a-hole but there is a reason that one of the upper classes turns on his gov't. There is reason he is able to recruit so many Saudis to his cause.

You know that I am not into root causes. Saudi government is repressive, but so is probably half of the regimes that are sitting in the UN.

What I think is unique with Saudi Arabia is the muslim fanaticism and upward mobility of the Saudi citizens, thanks to the oil profits.

Remove the Kings, and you will get another repressive regime (like just about all other Arab / muslim countries), and the problem of muslim fanaticism and upward mobility (thanks to oil profits) remain. And US may have a lot less influence over the new regime.

How do you think the US should deal with Saudi Arabia?

Joe
