As far as I can tell, Vietnam was about Vietnamese building a nation of their own.

Exactly. At its essence it was a Revolutionary War of Independence no different that the one we fought in 1776. Had we realized this we could have reached an early political solution without surrendering Vietnam to the Soviet Union. A political deal, in fact, not unlike that reached between India and the British at the end of WWII.
