<if you look at the sociology of science, science may be just as irrational as religion.... >

David, that's absurd. Science is based on the fact that different people can observe and check the same thing. Religion is based on somebody claiming to know something, such as divine revelation at the top of a mountain or something, which only they can know and others should believe them and give them money, girls, fancy robes and preferably some gold and maybe let's have a few human sacrifices too to ensure power stays with the divinely inspired.

Religion is always fake because it is always based on "Me the special knowing one and you the one who should follow me because I have the secret special knowledge which only I can know". It is not long after that special knowledge is claimed that the claims on the girls, money, power and everything else follows. Of course the acolytes of said super-sentient being get their share of jobs, money, service in the religion, not to mention a few girls and ideally the right to beat anyone that falls foul of the in-crowd.

Science and religion both have sociological attributes. But religion is exclusively pathological and irrational. Science is not pathological nor irrational.

Some fake scientists try to create an aura of super-sentience, but they are invariably found out and their Kingly claims to raiment of gold and silver thread are revealed for what they are by the little children pointing out that the King isn't wearing any clothes when the experimental repeatability is tested.

Con Fusion has languished and has not formed a sub-religion. Many attempts at fakery are exposed. It's amazing the fakes continue. Some are no doubt just for fun. Some might be genuine attempts to prove something true and evidence at first supports the idea but repeating the experiments shows it to have been false.

Religion can't be tested. It is inherently irrational because it has no foundation in reality which can be tested by other people. It's pure naive credulous belief. It is highly profitable. The girls attracted are attractive. Religious empire has got a LOT going for it!

Religion = irrational
Science = rational
