That's a great story. I'm saving it to show my husband, a boatbuilder who's severed the top joints of (count 'em) four fingers. Though he went to the hospital to be stitched up each time....

My grandpa ate bacon and eggs every day of his life, never tasted a tomato "because I don't have to taste them to know I don't like them," and died in his late nineties. He'd retired at 50 and had sat in his armchair for almost another half century. If he hadn't had to have his legs amputated when he was in his 80's and been refused painkillers for the remainder of his life so he moaned from morning to night for the entire last decade (the stupid doctors were afraid he'd "become addicted," like that would have mattered) he would have enjoyed the last ten years, too. His last words were, "The jig is up."
